egnairio is an improvisation duo made up of raymond brien and james mcilwrath.

alembic was created by the duo remotely. The tracks are based on a send and response process of making an improvisation, sending a short take to the other who then responds. The layers of improvisations have been extracted and reorganised in alembic.

alembic is the first part in something larger to come...

James is an experimental composer-performer.
He studies experimental performance at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire. He is Irish. He studied music at the University of York and is the Director of AMOK: an experimental performance platform based in York. James was part of Sound and Music's Composer-Curator scheme in 2019.

James makes things and does things.

James has made music for people to sing on their bikes, music for people in boxes after a dream about boxes, sounds without making the sounds. James has entered a void to hear tiny sound, improvised on a moving bridge, made a radio play about death, performed with fellow composer-performer Neil luck live onstage at the BBC proms and won nonclassical's 2020 battle of the bands.

Raymond, described as a musician ‘with great poise and understanding’, is a ‘powerful communicator through music’, as a freelance clarinettist and composer based in London, UK. Recent BBC Radio 3 performances include Birmingham Contemporary Music Festival’s Birtwistle celebration (Linoi for clarinet and piano) and the Total Immersion series of Detlev Glanert with BBC Symphony Orchestra. After winning the Hatfield and District Music Festival he has also recently performed the Nielsen Clarinet Concerto with DeHallivand Orchestra. They are artistic director of Thinking Minds Project and enjoy working just as much with new-music and improvisation as they do with solo recital repertoire.
Raymond also enjoys experimental music and is the co-founder of Egnairio Duo with James McIlwrath and have just released their first collaborative album ‘Alembic’ in 2021.
